Dr. Sangeeta   Tiwari, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)
Department of Biological Sciences
Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC)
University of Texas at El Paso
El Paso, TX79968, USA

Dr. Tiwari is an infectious disease researcher. During her research career at the Yale School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, she has published several papers in prestigious journals such as a PNAS, Immunity, Science and Nature Immunology, and has successfully filed a collaborative patent along with other awards in the Yale School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Tiwari had recently received the University of Texas System’s Faculty STARs Program Award and NIH grants.

The long-term goal of Dr. Tiwari's Lab is to understand the pathogenesis mechanisms of infectious bacteria as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria and Viruses as HIV and to develop vaccines and chemotherapy against them.   Our lab works on (1) the Identification of novel mycobacterial factors involved in virulence and evasion of host immune responses (2) Vaccines and (3) the Understanding of metabolic pathways required for survival and persistence of mycobacteria in the host (4) TB-HIV  co-pathogenesis (5) Role of the microbiome in these diseases.

Our Lab is also working on chemotherapeutics for Gastrointestinal Cancers focusing on various signaling cascades involved.

We use patient-derived organoid models, cell culture and mice models to address these questions along a combination of techniques such as molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, metabolomics, cell biology and immunology to address these questions. Her passion at UTEP involves developing a better understanding of the host-pathogen interactions, identifying potential new drug targets, and vaccine candidates and also initiating active collaboration with other research faculty. Most importantly her mission involves training the next generation of Scientists and experts in the field.
